Skill Levels & Ratings
Two rating systems are common in pickleball: the descriptive USA Pickleball scale (1.0–5.5+) for self-assessment, and DUPR (2.0–8.0), a data-driven system that updates automatically from match results.
Why get rated?
- Fair play & enjoyment — play with people at your skill level for more balanced, exciting games
- Track progress as your rating advances
- Tournament eligibility — many events require a rating
- Partner compatibility — find partners at your level
- Goal-setting for improvement
Traditional skill levels (USA Pickleball scale)
| Level | Description |
|---|---|
| 1.0 – 2.0 | Beginners learning the basic rules and strokes |
| 2.5 – 3.0 | Developing consistency, sustaining short rallies |
| 3.5 – 4.0 | Consistent strokes, executing tactics and strategy |
| 4.5+ | Mastery of the game — advanced strategy, shot variety, minimal unforced errors; semi-pro to professional play |
DUPR
DUPR uses a 2.000–8.000 scale updated automatically from match data:
| Range | Level |
|---|---|
| 2.00 – 3.99 | Beginner to intermediate |
| 4.00 – 4.99 | Advanced |
| 5.00 – 8.00 | Elite to professional |
